An unrelated piece of titanium history-trivia:
The Black Bird was originally conceived of as a single seat aircraft and was built of titanium in order to maximize it's performance during high speed, high altitude, long duration
flights. The SR-71 is reportedly able to fly at speeds in excess of Mach 4 and up to 125,000 ft.in altitude. An amusing historical footnote about these planes is that the titanium used
to build them was purchased from the Soviet Union itself, using CIA front companies.
The SR-71 was originally called RS-71. The name was changed not to out smart Soviet intelligence, but because President Johnson referred to the aircraft as the SR-71 in a public
speech mistake. The plane's developers decided that it was safer to change the name of the aircraft than to embarrass the President.
